Throuple
Also: thruple, triad relationship, three-way relationship
A romantic relationship between three people. A casual, popular-media synonym for a triad — most often used when all three partners are involved with one another.
Throuple is a blend of three and couple, and it has become the mainstream-media word for a romantic relationship among three people. In community vocabulary the more precise term is triad, and the two are largely interchangeable — though throuple tends to imply that all three people are romantically and sexually connected to each other (a closed or 'full' triad), rather than a vee in which one person is the shared link between two who aren't involved with each other.
Throuples form along many paths: an existing couple who together fall for a third, three people who come together at once, or a vee that closes into a triad as the two arms develop a connection. They may be hierarchical or fully egalitarian, cohabiting or not, open to further partners (polyamory) or closed to just the three (polyfidelity).
The configuration carries a specific challenge worth naming: the 'unicorn hunting' dynamic, where an existing couple seeks a third on terms that prioritise the couple and treat the newcomer as an accessory. A healthy throuple, by contrast, treats all three people as having equal standing to shape the relationship, regardless of who paired off first.
