About ENM in Massachusetts
Massachusetts has an outsized place in the recent history of US ethical non-monogamy: Somerville passed the first municipal multi-partner domestic-partnership ordinance in the country in 2020, with Cambridge and Arlington following soon after. The local community had a meaningful hand in those municipal efforts, and the legal-and-cultural environment around recognised partnerships of more than two people is more developed here than anywhere else in the United States.
Practically, the Greater Boston ENM community is academic-and-tech-flavoured, with strong overlap into the universities, the biotech and software industries, and the wider Northeast professional class. Recurring meetups, queer-ENM groups, kink-ENM-overlap groups, and intentional-family events are all easy to find in Cambridge, Somerville, and the wider city. Affirming clinicians are well-represented in the Boston metro and reachable from the rest of the state.
Outside Boston, Western Massachusetts — particularly the Pioneer Valley around Northampton, Amherst, and the Five Colleges — has its own long-standing ENM and queer-ENM community, distinct in flavour from Boston's: more rural, more queer-and-trans-led, more tied to the intentional-community tradition. The Cape and the South Shore have smaller communities, often anchored on individual long-running socials.
